The Future of Accounting Showed Up—and They’re Ready

This past Saturday, I had the honor of attending the 28th Annual NABA X Bentley Business Bowl at Bentley University Bowl. The event showcased an inspiring glimpse into the future of accounting, and I must say, the next generation is truly READY.

A decade ago, I served as a judge in the case competitions, and returning on Saturday, I witnessed a remarkable transformation. The growth in both student numbers and diversity was evident, and the level of confidence and insight displayed by the participants was truly remarkable.

These students, including freshmen, presented sharp, well-researched analyses to professional judges. They confidently addressed complex issues and discussed the tools they were mastering in classes like Java, SQL, and PowerDB. Their forward-thinking approach extends beyond traditional accounting, embracing how data and technology will shape the profession.

What struck me the most was their fearless attitude towards AI and automation. They see these advancements as opportunities to enhance strategic thinking, add value, and provide deeper insights. These students fully embrace the evolving role of accountants, showcasing their readiness to tackle the challenges ahead.

Events like this, supported by organizations such as NABA, accounting firms, professors, staff, and volunteers, play a crucial role in nurturing these future professionals. It is our responsibility to invest in them, offer mentorship, and ensure they have the best opportunities to succeed.

There’s been a lot of talk about the challenges in the accounting pipeline. But after this weekend, I can say with full confidence: the pipeline is strong, the talent is there, and the future of accounting is brighter than ever.

Let’s keep pushing forward, keep building, and keep showing these students that they belong here.

Kudos to the organizers of this event: NABA Bentley, and my esteemed NABA Boston colleagues Joshua T. Nwozor, CISA,MSc,MBA and Antoine Junior Melay, MBA. Bravo to the Bentley students who organized such an impressive event.
